Education Commission Meeting Minutes of May 26, 2006

St. Patrick Pastoral Council
Education Commission Meeting Minutes
May 21, 2006

Members Present: Irma Arbogast, Patty Evans, Norma Freeman, Rose
Morse and Sissy Wiseman.
Members Absent: Bernie Hess, Susan Johnson (excused/working) , Beth
Monti, Mary Rosshirt, Christina Smith, Kelly
Snyder (excused/editorial)

We began the meeting at 8:40 a.m. Norma led us in our opening prayer.

We were saddened to receive word of the resignation of Beth Monti from the Education Commission. Beth sent a message advising that other issues prevented her from continuing at this time. Members accepted her resignation and expressed to Beth our thanks for her service and our prayers that all the issues that are so disturbing to her now will clear up and that she would hear God’s voice and be at peace in whatever HE calls her to do in HIS body here at St. Patrick Church. Patty had brought a cake to surprise Beth for her 50th birthday. In her absence, we honored Beth by giving thanks and shared the cake together.

Report from Pastoral Council. The minutes from the April 30th meeting was read.

Old Business
1. Mission decision. Norma read the email message that was sent to
Deacon Alex Jones from Ashli Carter for Fr. Sill advising Deacon Alex regarding the Parish Council decisions. Members expressed disappointment with the decision and the manner in which the information was sent to Deacon Alex. We felt it inappropriate that an email message was sent without identifying the position of the sender and that the pastor should have conveyed the message.

Discussion continued regarding the difficulty, the many hours and the effort expended by Commission members in the past three years concerning presenting a Parish Mission. In addition to members traveling to hear Deacon Alex speak on two occasions, much effort was put forth in communication. We obtained 2 videos to share with groups of parishioners and felt that a concerted publicity program could have been designed to encourage parishioners to attend a parish mission.
In 2004 and 2005, members corresponded with three prospects. Members went to hear a possible speaker but he could not accept the offer to conduct a Mission due to calendar conflicts. The third prospect was John Sweitzer (laity) from Good News Ministries, a ministry from Margate, Florida but he could only come the week following Easter, 2006. Fr. Sill did not think that parishioners would be eager to attend a mission after Easter. Sweitzer has presented parish missions in a number of Columbus parishes and comes highly recommended by parishes in the Cincinnati Archdiocese, and from parishes in twenty states as well as Canada, Central America and Ireland.

We believe that detailed requirements in writing should be provided by the Parish Council as to what the expectations are for parish missions so that all parties are informed as to content of presentation, honorarium, travel and lodging and any other consideration be made known to the Commission before any further activity is undertaken toward securing a speaker for a parish mission. It has been our experience that for the most part, speakers are reserved as much as two years in advance.

Suggestion was made that Fr. Jeff Corning would be an excellent presenter as well as the young man that Fr. Corning encouraged and who was featured in the recent TV program, “Faith or the Girl.”

2. Proposed Visits for Bus Trips. Irma investigated a trip to Cincinnati
for a tour of St. Peter in Chains, telephone (513) 421-5354. Tours are available on Saturdays only and begin with the 11 a.m. Mass. There is also a park nearby that provides viewing of adjacent states as well as a good place for a group picnic, etc. Irma will ask for written information about the tour. Decision pending.
3. Cinco de Mayo. We have learned that celebrations in local areas are
more of a historical and cultural event observed by some Latinos and not the Mexican Independence Day that some native-born Americans mistake it for. The Commission is encouraging our brothers and sisters in our Hispanic/Latino Community to make special plans for celebrating a religious feast such as Our Lady of Guadalupe and to invite all parishioners to attend Mass and gather following Mass to experience and learn of their cultural and historical observances.
4. Lenten Concerts. Four concerts were presented in London. Three
concerts were presented at St. Patrick Church as part of the 140th Parish Anniversary. Attendance was disappointing for all of the concerts although those who attended expressed appreciation and gratitude for the opportunities.
5. Book Study. Norma reported that the study of the book, Living the
Eucharist/Celebrating its RHTHYMS in Our Lives by Father Paul Bernier, S.S.S. was progressing well. Ten parishioners have been meeting from 4:30-5:50 PM on Fridays with Bernie Hess facilitating the study. The book has been very illuminating and transforming for them.

New Business
1. Commission vacancy. Education Commission will need a replacement for Beth Monti. Sissy Wiseman suggested contacting Don Miller and David Husek. Sissy will contact them as to serving on the commission.
2. Norma shared about the publication of Wedding Guidelines for St.
Patrick Church. Commission members expressed concern that the publication seemed to be a business oriented model rather than a Christian model.
3. Irma shared about a prayer request being circulated asking that the
faithful attend Mass and pray especially on June 6. This year, the numerical sequence is 666. People are being encouraged to pray for protection and mercy. Many are hoping that Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will also be made available in many of the parishes. Irma shared that a 1917 message at Fatima from the Blessed Virgin contained the word that disrespect shown thru fashion and attire offended Jesus.
4. Concern was raised about apparel currently being worn to church that is inappropriate. Short, short skirts and shorts and see-thru blouses or tops for women and girls as well as apparel for men and boys are not appropriate for church attendance. Parishioners should be encouraged to dress appropriately and to dress up as a matter of respect in the presence of Jesus. We encourage some direction from the pastor be considered regarding this matter and that it be given during the announcements following Mass and if appropriate to be included in the homily.
5. Sissy Wiseman inquired as to why more was not being provided to honor
the Blessed Virgin Mary during the month of May. It was mentioned that a prelude was presented only one Sunday of May. We suggested that she speak to the pastor regarding this matter.
6. Irma shared an article printed in ALLNEWS, news and views from
American Life League regarding an on-line petition campaign to end all
taxpayer funded support for Planned Parenthood across the nation. This effort is to protest the more than $265 million in funding (in one year alone) from federal, state and local governments. The internet petition is accessible on StopPlannedParenthoodTaxFunding.com. Signed petition cards were handed out at the March for Life in January 2006. Members were encouraged to sign the petition and to spread the word to others.
7. Patty Evans has agreed to serve on the Education Commission for a few
more months to help with transition. Norma Freeman advised in February that she would be leaving the Commission following the May meeting after serving for 7 years. The Commission members thanked Norma for her faithfulness and for all the work that she has done to bring about so many good things for St. Patrick Church.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:50 a.m. with prayer offered by Irma Arbogast. The Commission will not meet again until Sunday, September 11, 2006.

Minutes submitted by Norma Freeman. Approved: 05/24/06
